Oh Em Gee. Trotsky's building a new PC!

This will be the masterthread for my newest enterprise: losing weight and building myself a new computer.

You see, my girlfriend had a great idea to help her stay motivated to lose weight. She’s the farthest thing from a butter troll I can think of, but she wants to lose a few pounds, and tighten certain areas up, so more power to her. Of course, as the 212 pound hulking beast I had become in the past year, I decided I should follow this plan as well, and this weekend, she made me a paper chain thingy that represents the major landmarks in my weight loss.

Currently, I’m at 206, and at 205 I can order myself The Walking Dead comic book series.

At 199 I can get Battlestar Galactica v2.0 on DVD.

At 193 I can buy Battle Royale on DVD.

And when I get below 180, I can purchase either an Xbox 360 or a brand new PC, and seeing as Roms and Jon both have 360’s, and I don’t mind annoying them both, I’m going with the new PC. This is where you all come in.

Now, I’m no computer hardware expert, but I’m going to build this thing myself, just so I can choose every last component, and make it my own (this will cut down on cost, increase individual component reliability, and increase the longevity of my purchase). I’m not really on a super tight budget (let’s say $1200 to $1600), but I would like it to be as cheap as possible (to allow for maximum game buying once I get the thing up and running!).

Here’s my www.newegg.com wishlist as it stands. Any and all suggestions are appreciated when it comes to products you’ve worked with before, brands you like and don’t like, motherboard suggestions, and anything else you can think of (see if I’m bottlenecking anywhere).

Oh, and I’ll make changes here as I make changes in my plans. I’ll even post pictures of the hot new box when it’s all built. YOU CAN LIVE VICARIOUSLY THROUGH ME: A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER FOOLISHLY PISSING AWAY HIS MEAGER INCOME ON A LUXURY ITEM!

Case: Antec SUPER LANBOY Silver anodized aluminum ATX Mini Tower Computer Case - Retail

Motherboard: ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - retail – $166.99

Video Card: HIS Hightech HX80GOQT256-3TOEN Radeon X800GTO IceQ II Turbo 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail
I would love suggestions on video cards!

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA3800BVBOX - Retail – $322.00
I’m really happy with this, I think, but if you know something better…

RAM: CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model VS1GB400C3 - Retail – $164.00
Price is times 2, because everyone needs more RAM.

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE WD3000JB 300GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM – $125.00
I’m thinking of skimping here. I don’t really need 300GB, as I’ll be keeping my current Dell, and it can be used for storage, and random Internet junk that I find. I’m not even sure I’m going to take my new computer “online” (meaning to cookie filled porn websites).

I’ve since changed plans slightly:

Case: Antec LifeStyle SONATA II Piano Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 ATX 12V V2.0 for AMD & Intel systems Power Supply - Retail – $92.99
Because, um, yeah, the less I have to fuss with a power supply, the better.

Video Card: eVGA 256-P2-N386-AX Geforce 6800GS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail – $189.00
Looks like a pretty darn good card.

New total:

$1,059.98

Wow I had no idea they were making reasonablyish priced FOUR HUNDRED GIG hard drives!

Edit:

Oh wait thats the front page not your wishlist!

IT SEEMS YOU ALL FORGOT ABOUT TAYLON-MEET

I SHOULD PROBABLY CHECK OUT THE AVAILABLE HOTELS AND TALK TO TROTSKY ABOUT RESTAURANTS SINCE APPARENTLY HE KNOWS WINDSOR GOOD

TROT GET IN THE AIM

all caps

Oh God, what’s the name of that Thai-ish restaurant? It’s so fantastically delcious, classy, upscale, and quiet enough to hold a conversation.

You know what, I’ll check into all this, and we’ll revive the Met and Gret megathread.

BTW, if you want to buy something for me, go right ahead. I won’t stop you.

I will buy you something if I win the 80 million pound tax free lotto I entered today!

And I’ll check out hotel stuff tomorrow! Or maybe thursday, tomorrow is Frozen Throne day.

Ok, but promise me you’ll spend the other 79 odd million pounds on some sort of robot that will hunt and destroy chavs.

Oh, and just to not make anyone nervous, the restaurant isn’t that pricey. At least it wasn’t when the US dollar was strong. Now it’s weak like a kitten, and Canada is like going to a second United States, except its cleaner, and the money is red and has old ladies on it.

Proc - Good
Video Card - Make it 2! =)
Storage - Make it SATA not IDE for the HDs (Seagate, Hitachi, IBM are good methinks)
RAM - Good.
Case - Who cares?
Mother<s>ship</s>board - ASUS is good.

Other suggestions - Get a cheap-o Turtle Beach sound card, onboard sound is crappy.

My super-awesome suggestion: Get a case that will keep the computer cool. Or get 1000 fans. Otherwise the computer will get sad and just stop for no reason (the reason is heat).

P.S. R We Guna GiT Sum piX of ur NEW BoD?

That is a given, it would be partially controlled by somethingawful goons!

As for the video card, I would go with this <a href=“http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102505”>Radeon X850XT for $219</a> over the 6800GS. Also, some Corsair XMS or Kingston HyperX would be better than the valueselect RAM you have on your list.

Otherwsie, it looks like a baddass system. Perhaps even better than mine… which of course means that I need to drop another $500+ on upgrades in the near future.

Yeah, I meant for the HD to be SATA, but then I messed up and didn’t put that there. Thank you for catching it.

Also, I wish I could afford two video cards, but I will have extra slots!

And good call on the sound card, although I think I’ll take care of that after the fact (along with the network adapter, and such).

Any reason for not going with the value RAM, other than the fact that it probably is designed with Valu in mind (fewer e’s mean more more valu)?

Also, I will certainly consider that there video card. It does seem impressive, although the reviews claim that it gets pretty hot. I don’t know how big a concern that should be for me.

And sadly, I’m still above 200. I’m getting so impatient.
